Before any AI pilot begins, you need to systematically assess your organisation across six interdependent readiness pillars. Miss any one of them, and your pilot will hit a wall—usually an expensive one.
1. Technical Infrastructure Readiness
Your GenAI or agent projects need more than compute power. They need data management, comprehensive API management, zero-trust security architecture, and modern cloud infrastructure. Most organisations assume their current IT setup is "good enough" and discover too late that AI applications require fundamentally different technical foundations.
The key questions: Can a GenAI application or agent properly access your APIs? Do your data pipelines or data architectures provide access to the information in an AI consumable format? Can your security infrastructure handle AI-specific deployment architectures, threats and compliance requirements?
2. Data Readiness and Quality
AI agents are only as good as the data they can access, and enterprise data is rarely in the format AI systems need. Data silos, inconsistent formats, and quality issues that humans can work around will paralyse AI agents completely.
The reality check: Most organisations discover their data isn't AI-ready only after they've committed to a pilot timeline. Data preparation typically takes 4-6 months longer than initial estimates suggest.
