The Agent’s Insight 🤖
What I’ve Observed or Learned on the Front Line in the Last 7 Days
Being British, this piece got my attention at the end of last week.
It suggests that AI agents are being looked at as promising a much-needed boost to productivity and competitiveness for the struggling UK economy, offering a path to overcome current growth challenges.
Considering the the hiring landscape, exacerbated the government increasing employer National Insurance (employment tax) contributions, businesses are under immense pressure to control costs. As such, widespread adoption of AI agents, despite being framed as "freeing talent," could be quietly leveraged as a convenient mechanism to reduce headcount and circumvent rising business expenses.
As someone that’s a big believer (and active practitioner) of Agentic solutions being able to scale businesses by reducing the load on human capital and giving businesses a chance to have more high-value human interaction, I’m thinking this is a potential Trojan Horse for my home country via a second order effect of a poor economic environment, higher operating costs and availability of automation technology.
How this really plays out? Only time will tell.
On My Radar Over the Last Seven Days 🛰
The Capgemini Research Institute produced a report on AI in Action. Solid methodological rigor with this one. 1,607 executives surveyed across 15 countries and 13 industries giving insights into AI adoption among large enterprises.
It’s a good read on the direction of AI trends among billion-dollar companies, but approach specific ROI claims with healthy skepticism.
The headline 1.7x return figure is self-reported without independent verification, and the research was conducted during peak AI hype when executives face pressure to demonstrate AI success.
If you want to read the report yourself, grab it here 👇. Though I warn you, it’s 100 pages long!
Job Market Insights of the Last Week ⌨💲
Strategic AI Talent Trends - AI Hiring Boom in Banking
Wall Street is leading the charge in AI hiring, with financial firms like JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs investing heavily in building in-house AI teams.
This trend is not just limited to finance; industries such as healthcare and retail are rapidly following suit, recognising AI as a foundational element rather than a competitive edge. As companies scramble to fill these roles, expect a significant shift in talent acquisition strategies across sectors.

Emerging AI Roles & Career Paths - Prompt Engineer
This role is gaining traction as companies increasingly rely on generative AI tools, with salaries reaching up to $900,000 in Silicon Valley. Professionals in this field need a blend of technical skills, including proficiency in Python and experience with large language models (LLMs).
The demand for prompt engineers is expected to grow as businesses seek to optimise AI outputs and integrate these technologies into their workflows.

Critical AI Skills in Demand - AI Fluency
As AI tools become ubiquitous, the demand for professionals who can effectively integrate these technologies into existing workflows is skyrocketing.
Companies are prioritising training in AI fluency, with 84% of leaders planning to invest in employee training over the next year.
Professionals can develop this skill through targeted courses and hands-on experience with AI applications in their respective fields.

Contrarian Corner - Is the AI Infrastructure Boom is Sustainable? 😐
The prevailing narrative suggests that the demand for AI infrastructure, particularly high-end servers, will continue to soar, driven by companies like Super Micro Computer (SMCI) capitalising on the AI gold rush.
However, recent reports indicate a significant slowdown, with Super Micro's revenue plummeting 19% sequentially and a staggering 74% drop in stock price since March 2024, reflecting a market oversupply and delayed customer demand. This paints a different picture: the AI infrastructure market may be oversaturated, and the hype cycle appears to be peaking, leading to a potential contraction in demand for costly GPU clusters.
For AI leaders, this means reassessing investment strategies and focusing on operational efficiency rather than chasing the latest AI trends. Source

I haven't seen any evidence that AI is reducing the load on human capital. On the contrary. With everyone having access to the same tools, productivity expectations are simply going up across the board. It's a Red Queen race.
